We are excited and honored to announce that Solo.io has been recognized as a Visionary in the 2024 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for API Management for the second consecutive year. We believe this recognition underscores our dedication to innovation and partnership with leading organizations like T-Mobile, Vonage, and Domino’s to deliver cloud-native API connectivity at scale.

Helping enterprises transition into the cloud-native era

As Kubernetes celebrates its 10th anniversary, enterprises continue to rapidly adopt cloud-native approaches to accelerate API delivery, meet performance and scale requirements, and leverage automation to scale to an exponentially larger number of APIs both external and internal to an organization. That said, realizing the full benefits of a cloud-native approach will never happen using a legacy API management solution dropped into a container image or bolted on to your Kubernetes environment. Succeeding with API connectivity in Kubernetes requires an API gateway built from the ground up to align with cloud-native technologies and patterns.

Gloo Gateway is a cloud-native API Gateway that simplifies API management in distributed environments, offering a federated control plane, fully declarative API built for GitOps, and the ability to scale elastically for the most demanding production workloads. Powered by the open-source Envoy Proxy, Gloo Gateway delivers comprehensive observability, security, control, and connectivity for API management across any distributed environment.

Supporting the modern developer’s experience

As organizations face challenges scaling small operations teams to larger and larger numbers of APIs, traditional high-touch, ticket-based workflows aren’t sustainable. The self-service experience that developers want (and now expect) is increasingly being provided through the introduction of an Internal Developer Portal (IDP) by dedicated platform teams. These platforms can incorporate API Management guardrails using declarative configuration and programmable API gateway infrastructure, giving development teams self-service while ensuring policy and observability features are in place to support APIs in production.

Gloo Gateway provides a fully declarative API based on the Kubernetes Gateway API. Using this open standard as a foundation, Gloo Gateway includes enterprise features such as authentication, authorization, rate limiting, transformation and data loss prevention, as extensions to the core API. Native Backstage plugins allow Gloo Gateway to integrate seamlessly with any Backstage installation to provide dynamic catalog integration, self-service API workflows, and API relationship mapping. Finally, an API-first developer portal provides a modern React-based external developer portal out of the box while also allowing for API-based integration with any front-end web framework.

Building the next generation of API Connectivity

Gloo Gateway’s capabilities extend beyond classic north-south traffic patterns for API Management. The latest release of Gloo Gateway provides an automatic mTLS feature that allows for automatic configuration of the gateway with required certificates and identity to securely communicate with any workload in the east-west traffic plane using mTLS. This provides customers with the ability to deploy a full zero-trust architecture across their north-south and east-west traffic.

Leveraging an API gateway to secure, observe, and control the consumption of third-party APIs is a use case that has shown consistent growth in the API Management space. Now that every organization in the planet is looking to integrate Generative AI and LLMs with their applications, third-party API consumption has taken on a whole new level of importance. To address the specific requirements and use cases for LLM consumption, Solo introduced Gloo AI Gateway to help organizations onboard Gen AI use cases quickly while providing safety and security controls required to bring LLM-integrated applications to production.

Kudos to our customers and community.

Thank you to our customers and community for partnering with Solo to build the next generation of API connectivity. We’re honored to be recognized for our vision over the past two years and are excited for the future as we continue helping organizations connect to the cloud.
