Today, the Solo.io team announces the Service Mesh Hub, the first ever industry hub for the community and ecosystem to collaborate on service mesh, and for end users to deploy and operate their service mesh environments.
The vision for the Service Mesh Hub started almost a year ago with the launch of the SuperGloo open source project for service mesh orchestration. SuperGloo is an abstraction layer to unify management lifecycle of any mesh from installation to operations — whether you choose one or multiple meshes for your environment.
The Service Mesh Hub is building on top of and extending the foundational capabilities of SuperGloo to provide a great end user experience and create a central place for the community and ecosystem to collaborate and innovate.
User Experience for All Your Mesh(es)
At the heart of the Service Mesh Hub is the Dashboard which lets you manage and operate everything about your meshes in one place while providing a great user experience.
This single pane of glass gives you:
- Simple, one click mesh installation, with installers for different meshes (Istio, Likered, App Mesh, and more) built into the Hub
- Browse and install available meshes and 3rd party extensions
- Discover any existing meshes and their configurations and bring them into the Hub to manage, get recommendations of compatible extensions, and install them on your mesh
- View all your meshes (from any provider) installed on any cloud
- View, manage and automate your mesh configurations (i.e. cert rotations)
- View the services and extensions running on your mesh
Community and Ecosystem Collaboration and Innovation
An important part of the Service Mesh Hub is facilitating collaboration and innovation from the open source community, vendors and service-mesh end users , who can use the hub to initiate conversations, build new tools, and share them with each other. The abstraction provided by SuperGloo in the Service Mesh Hub makes building on top of service meshes and integrating to it accessible to more people. You don’t have to learn the ins and outs of each mesh in order to build new tools.
The Service Mesh Hub provides an Extension Catalog, that lists tools that can be used to add more functionality to your mesh. You can install extensions directly from the Extension Catalog to any of your service meshes. Installing an extension from the catalog is easy — just click and go from the recommended list of compatible extensions for your mesh.
Our friends over at Weaveworks have integrated Flagger with SuperGloo and it is also one of the first service mesh extensions available on the Extensions Catalog today. Flagger is a Kubernetes operator that automates the promotion of canary deployment giving users progressive delivery to the service mesh of their choice. Learn more in Weaveworks blog post.
What’s Next? We hope you find the Service Mesh Hub informative and useful in your service mesh projects. We are not done yet — the vision of the Service Mesh Hub is to provide a central hub that provides all the resources you need for your entire adoption lifecycle so check back with us soon!
In the meantime, sign up for our webinar on June 6th for a demo and check out the resources below for more information.
